The National Curriculum

The National Curriculum sets out the most important knowledge and skills that every pupil has a right to learn. It is a teaching framework which determines what should be taught and identifies targets for learning. The focus of the National Curriculum, together with the wider school curriculum is to “ensure that pupils develop from an early age the literacy and numeracy skills they needs to learn; to provide them with a guaranteed, full and rounded entitlement to learning; to foster their creativity; and …to inspire in pupils a joy and commitment to learning that will last a lifetime.”

The National Curriculum is organised into core and foundation subjects. The core subjects are English, Mathematics, Science and Information Communication Technology. Core subjects are allocated a high subject weighting on the timetable.

The foundation subjects are history, geography, art, design technology, physical education, foreign languages (and religious education).

The National Curriculum is divided into 5 key stages. Key stage 1 includes pupils in Year 1 and Year 2, key stage 2 includes pupils from Year 3 to Year 6. Key stage 3 includes Year 7, 8 and 9, Key stage 4 includes Year 10 and11 and Key stage 5 includes pupils in Year 12 and 13.

On the following pages you will finds notes from the National Curriculum explaining what the children are taught in each subject at each key stage. You will also find further information about each subject that is specific to the school.
